Video Analysis and Interpretations - Week 5

Cameras are Soul Keepers

  • Sometimes our life experiences are directly linked to the world that we do, the same goes for Bill. He once almost drowned, and that completely changed his perspective on the digital camera and life itself.
  • He teaches us in order to understand what one perceives, we have to explore what allures us.
    • We have to explore even what we don’t understand, that is art.
  • One of the things that stuck out to me was the theme of self-knowledge
    • We should continue to look at small things in life and marginalize them.
  • One of the main topics discussed is how cameras are amazing piece that records life around us. However sometimes people don’t realize that cameras as an entire makeup sustains from years to come, from what they record and themselves.
    • So finally, with our art, we should lead by example and just show things as they are. And not overthink too much. As emerging artists we should continue to explore ourselves and the world around us. Big or small.
  • Bill explains in his interview so naturally and fluently, but simply as well. He teaches us about how we perceive art and the world too.
Pipilotti Rist Interview:
We Get Used Fast to Constraints

  •  With her art gallery piece show, it symbolizes on freedom, space, and perception
  • With one of Pipi’s works, she has a collection of wall piece of white objects. I think what she is trying to portray, is that we focus on color too much, and its sometimes a relief  to not constrain ourselves on the details and “purify” our color palette.
  • I liked the video with the use of music, and sound effects, it gives a very airy feeling.
  • Finally, I appreciate Pipi’s view on art, but also she allows us to understand pieces of life we don’t usually think about.
Paul Pfeiffer in “Time”

  • I pondered this sentence Pfeiffer mentioned, “There is something seductive about “pre-digestive” images. Does the image make us, or do we make it?
    • I think this is an important element to realize and understand, and question ourselves. When we look at filtered images being given to us, or what we make, is it really our creation or theirs?
  • When we discover our own material, we soon begin to realize that it takes it’s own form. The more we work with our art it begins to create a characteriture of its own.
  • Time isn’t just about the hour, minutes seconds. It’s about the perception of focus. When we sit with things for awhile and let them expand, we let it speak for themselves, and soon after we see the bigger picture. That is what Pfeiffer is talking to us about in his work.
  • Overall this video teaches us about focus.
