Video Analysis and Interpretations (Week 1)
Impossible Image - Richard Mosse
When reviewing over this short documentary that photographs and films life in the Congo they are several ironies. One of them being the usage of technology of the camera where it first was used to find enemies. Whereas in this documentary it is used to expose the unspoken life in the Congo.
Secondly, the more apparent meaning, as clear as the color in the film, its the communication of the humanitarian disaster that happens in the Congo, it's better to communicate this with visual aspects rather than with words.
Passage - Mohau Modisakeng
Rather than analyzing this video, I chose to just be in the moment. Being Black myself, I think of times where if my ancestors weren't taken from their homeland, where would they be? Where would I be? Mohau Modisakeng's video made me ponder the fact that when we were taken, so was our identity, no questions asked. We were forced into this life in America.
Introduction to Linguistic Relativity
- We all know that spoken language is different for everyone, depending on where they came from. However visual language is different
- Visual language everyone sees things the same, just how we interpret them may be different.
- It's easier to communicate through visuals inside of a video, as long as the visuals are made clear.
- The way how video as a language expands our thought process is because we're focusing what's on screen, because visual language always has different interpretations we think subjectively and objectively at the same time.
